The Gaderung

In Anglo-Saxon, “Gaderung” means “gathering” or “assembly.” It captures the spirit of communities coming together to celebrate, share stories, and enjoy food and music—just as people did during the seasonal festivals of Lammas and Yule. At Ad Gefrin, The Gaderung brings this ancient tradition to life, inviting visitors to join a modern-day celebration rooted in the land, people, and culture of Northumbria.

The Gaderung unites local farmers, makers, bakers, chefs, musicians, storytellers, and communities in a festival rooted in Northumbria’s land, people, and produce. Lammas celebrates the first gathering of grain, a time of thanksgiving and communal feasting that promises sustenance for the winter. Yule marks the midwinter season, honouring the return of light, the richness of preserved harvest produce, and the warmth of community and hospitality during the darkest months. At Ad Gefrin, these ancient Anglo-Saxon traditions are reimagined for the present day.

Every stall tells a story of local land and labour—from moor to coast, farm to table.
