Craft, culture and community

We are delighted to begin a new partnership with The Biscuit Factory, bringing contemporary art and culture together with the heritage, craftsmanship and sense of place at the heart of Ad Gefrin.

Based in Ouseburn, Newcastle upon Tyne, The Biscuit Factory is an independent contemporary art, craft and design gallery, housed within a former Victorian biscuit manufacturing warehouse. For almost 25 years, it has provided a platform for artists, makers and designers, bringing together an ever-changing collection of original art, handmade craft, jewellery and design.

Now, for the first time, The Biscuit Factory is taking its gallery programme beyond its Newcastle home.

From October 2026, The Biscuit Factory will curate a programme of exhibitions, conversations and gatherings at Ad Gefrin, creating a new connection between Newcastle and north Northumberland and opening up further opportunities for artists and audiences across the region.

It is a partnership rooted in shared values. Whether creating a work of art or making whisky, there is an understanding of material and process, of patience and skill, and of the importance of allowing something to develop over time.

Modern Classics

The partnership begins with Modern Classics, opening at Ad Gefrin on Friday 23rd October.

Bringing together work by Paula Dunn, Angelo Murphy and Garry Courtnell, the exhibition explores light and atmosphere, the everyday and the elemental. Each artist works with traditional techniques to create distinctly contemporary pieces, bringing a new creative perspective to Ad Gefrin.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a programme of events, beginning with a special Supper Club on Thursday 22nd October, where guests will have the opportunity to enjoy a sneak preview of Modern Classics ahead of its official opening.

On Friday 23rd October, exhibiting artist Paula Dunn will join us for a special In Conversation With event, offering the opportunity to discover more about her work, inspiration and creative practice.

Throughout the partnership, Corenkyn Members can also look forward to exclusive access to previews and one-off events, with more details to follow.

A shared appreciation of craft

Creativity and craftsmanship have been woven into Ad Gefrin from the beginning.

Most recently, this has taken shape through our Crǣft Series, our first release of Northumbrian Single Malt Whisky. For the inaugural release, North East artists Voirrey Taylor, Luke McTaggart and Sarah Calavera were commissioned to create three individual artworks, each becoming the label for one of three single cask whiskies.

The Crǣft Series brings two creative processes together: the craft of making whisky and the work of artists inspired by the place and stories around them. As the series continues, we will work with more emerging artists from across the region to create original artwork for future releases.

Our partnership with The Biscuit Factory is a natural continuation of that commitment, creating another platform for artists and makers while giving visitors to Ad Gefrin new ways to experience contemporary creativity here in north Northumberland.
