Our Building
The team responsible for realising Ad Gefrin is world class. Together we have delivered a destination that whilst echoing the aesthetic of the great halls of Northumbrian kings who lived here centuries ago, marries the latest technological efficiencies and sustainable design practices with meticulous attention to detail, and the innovative use of traditional and contemporary materials with the finest of finishes.
The building design team was led by Northumbrian architect, Richard Elphick supported by Todd Milburn, Red Fox, and JCP. Whilst the interiors are the inspiration of internationally renowned experience designers Studio MB of Edinburgh, and the lighting, the domain of Michael Grubb Studio. Our stills in our distillery were made by fourth generation family firm, Forsyths Ltd, who have designed, built and supplied distillation equipment to create spirits around the world, See them being delivered below.
The Architecture
Our architect, Richard Elphick, has created a remarkable and memorable building that exudes true Arts and Crafts character and spirit. From their juxtaposition and how they are massed, as well as their individual shapes, the buildings create a strong urban context and sense of place in their own right; whilst the finite modelling and texture of the external detail instils a sense of wellbeing. The result is something that feels right for its location and place, something that feels like it has always been there and grown organically into what it is. The buildings will therefore stand the test of time well and remain attractive forever.
Internally the progression of interconnected spaces from the entrances of all the buildings through to their core are contrasting and stimulating with varied volumes, but with an acute attention to design detail and balanced decoration, texture and colour. Even internal acoustics are carefully designed to enhance a sense of enveloping warmth and intimacy.
The design of the buildings closely follows the theories of the architectural philosopher Christopher Alexander and as such, very successfully positively works on the sub-conscious and psychology of those who view, experience and enjoy the development as a whole and the individual buildings in particular. As a human experience it is positive, warm and secure.

From early in the construction phase, under the watchful eye of Brims Construction Ltd, we have been supporting the local communities companies and craftspeople. Many hands are going into making Ad Gefrin and our individual heroes are too many to mention, so many of them local, and all of them able to take pride in the quality of their workmanship and attention to detail. They are all integral to the statement building we are creating.
