Ad Gefrin is the vision of Alan and Eileen Ferguson, a husband-and-wife team whose roots in Northumberland run deep. Together, they dreamed of creating a place that would both celebrate the region’s extraordinary heritage and provide lasting opportunities for its future.

Opened in March 2023, Ad Gefrin celebrates and showcases the unique heritage, ancient hospitality, and contemporary crafts, arts and produce of Northumberland while re-awakening the Northumbrian tradition of whisky distilling that had slept for over 200 years.

For Alan and Eileen, Ad Gefrin is about more than whisky and history — it’s about people. Their commitment to Wooler, the community, and the land has shaped every decision, from restoring the stories of the Anglo-Saxon royal hall to crafting spirits that honour Northumberland’s character.

They have also been joined in this vision by their son, Dr. Chris Ferguson, whose expertise and passion for heritage and community engagement have helped ensure that Ad Gefrin is not only a distillery, but a place of learning, culture, and connection. Through his work, the stories of the Anglo-Saxons are brought vividly to life, linking the spirit of Northumberland’s past with its present and future.

With the support of their family, they have built Ad Gefrin as a legacy of welcome, a place where visitors are embraced like kin, and where the values of warmth, generosity, and togetherness shine through in every detail.
