Plan Your Visit to Ad Gefrin

Ad Gefrin is located in Wooler in Northumberland, right in the heart of the region’s countryside, on the edge of the Cheviot Hills.

Our experience, including our great hall, museum and distillery, are located nearby to the ancient archaeological site of Gefrin, or more commonly known as Yeavering.

You can visit Ad Gefrin throughout the year, by car or public transport. There are various routes and public transport options available depending on your location. Once you arrive in Wooler, signs and directions will guide you to Ad Gefrin, although our building is easily recognisable. We welcome visitors to our Ad Gefrin experience 6 days a week from 10am-6pm (every day except Tuesday) for 50 weeks of the year. We will be open on Bank Holidays except for Christmas Day – a worthy exception. We will close during the second and third weeks of January for a full deep clean of all our facilities. The admission fees for our experiences vary based on age and group size, as well as for special events and tours. Please visit our tickets page for more information and to book your visit to Ad Gefrin.

Tickets for Ad Gefrin can be purchased online through our website. Online booking is easy and secure, and allows you to select your preferred time slot for our experiences, guided tours and special events. Alternatively, tickets can be purchased on-site upon arrival, but it's advisable to check availability in advance, especially during peak times of the year. Currently our gift vouchers can only be redeemed in person in our gift shop. Bear with us, we are working on the technology to be able to allow you to use them online too.

Refund and exchange policies for tickets vary and are outlined at the time of purchase. Please review our refund and exchange policies before buying tickets. If you have any further queries about ticket refunds or exchanges please contact a member of our team.

At Ad Gefrin, we prioritise the comfort and accessibility of all of our visitors. 

Wheelchair access is provided throughout the site, ensuring a seamless experience for everyone.

Your comfort and enjoyment are important to us at Ad Gefrin. If you have any specific concerns or require further assistance regarding accessibility, please do not hesitate to contact us. We are here to make your visit as enjoyable and accessible as possible.

Dogs and their humans are very welcome in our grounds and outdoors seating areas. Unfortunately, dogs are not permitted in the indoor areas, with the exception of service and support dogs. Due to the grille flooring on the first floor of the Distillery itself, we suggest that it is not suitable for service and support dogs to accompany visitors on this portion of the tour. However, we are very happy to guide you ourselves and reunite you with your companions as you reach firm footing again. Ad Gefrin offers visitor-only parking on site. We have 81 car-parking spaces including charging points for 6 electric vehicles and 3 accessible spaces. We also have lockable racks to accommodate 18 bicycles.

Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate Camper Vans, Mini-buses, or Coaches at present.

Additionally, there is also ample car-parking in Wooler only a short walk away.

Smoking and vaping are not allowed anywhere on site at Ad Gefrin. We have strict no-smoking and vaping policies due to the nature of our experiences. Visitors are  required to smoke or vape in designated areas outside of the site premises.

Photography is permitted within some areas of the Ad Gefrin experience for personal, non-commercial use. However, please note that due to the sensitive nature of the collections within our museum and great hall, that photography is not permitted. If you have any queries about photography during your visit, please speak to a member of our team, who will be happy to assist you.

About Ad Gefrin

Ad Gefrin means ‘by the hill of goats’ and comes from the location of the 7th century Anglo-Saxon royal palace at Yeavering four miles away that inspired us from the very beginning.  You can still see black and white wild goats on the slopes and valleys of the Cheviot Hills as they have grazed for centuries.

Gefrin, commonly referred to as Yeavering, is renowned for being an Anglo-Saxon Royal Palace and now is a significant archaeological site. The logo of Ad Gefrin is inspired by the archaeological site of Gefrin, also known as Yeavering. The site was once the location of the Anglo Saxon Royal Court of Northumbria, and following its excavation, is an archaeological site of great significance both regionally and nationally. The logo is designed to capture the meaning of Ad Gefrin in Old English, which translates to "at the hill of the goats" in English. The Ad Gefrin distillery crafts the finest spirits, made for sharing and toasting with at life’s special moments. Our spirits include our Tácnbora whisky blend, our English Single Malt Whisky and our Thirlings Dry Gin. Our skilled team of international distillers  use traditional techniques combined with modern innovation to create unique and flavourful spirits that cater to diverse palates. Please note that access to the distillery experience is by guided tours only.

Our distillery tours and tastings are an immersive journey into the art of distillation, which include access to our distillery, cask store and tasting room. Our knowledgeable guides will lead you through the distillation process, showcasing our state-of-the-art facilities in our distillery and sharing the rich history and inspiration behind our spirits. Additionally, you'll have the opportunity to sample some of our finest creations in our tasting room. Children of all ages are welcomed in the Great Hall and Museum. Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate children under 8 years of age on our Distillery Tours and Tastings (with the exception of babes in arms). This is for safety reasons given that the Distillery is an industrial setting. Children aged 8-17 years of age can however go on the Distillery Tour and Tastings but must always be accompanied by an adult. Yes, you can purchase Ad Gefrin spirits both online and on site at our gift shop. Whether you're looking for a unique gift or simply want to indulge in purchasing exceptional spirits for yourself, our Thirlings Dry Gin and Tácnbora whisky blend are the perfect choice. It is our intention to release a very limited number of barrels for sale each year, however you will need to be one of our Corenkyn members to have an option to buy.  There is already a waiting list, as the promise of what our Single Malt Whisky will be is already highly prized. It takes 3 years and a day to officially make a single malt whisky, but that’s just the beginning.  As Ben, our Head Distiller, is fond of saying, we will only release it from our distillery when it is ready! So the answer is sometime from 2025 onwards.

Yes, Ad Gefrin takes pride in producing vegan and gluten-free spirits. We understand the importance of catering to various dietary preferences and restrictions. Rest assured, our whisky and gin are crafted within our distillery without the use of animal products and do not contain gluten, making them suitable for vegans and individuals with gluten sensitivities. Ad Gefrin Bistro & Shop

The Bistro will be open from 10am to 6pm every day except Tuesdays, with last orders for food at 5.00pm. The daytime brunch menu runs from Thursday to Sunday from 10am-12pm and our Sunday Lunch menu  is served from 12 noon. We will be offering evening service in the Bistro on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings later in the year – further details to follow. You can make a booking for you and your guests for your preferred date and time using our quick and easy online reservation system, or alternatively you can contact our team.

Yes, you can book a table at our bistro. Whether you're planning a romantic dinner, a gathering with friends or a special celebration, we recommend making a reservation in advance to ensure we can accommodate you and your guests. You can easily book a table by contacting our bistro directly or using our online reservation system on our website. You can also take a look at our menus online before your visit, whether you would like to try our traditional sunday lunch, our delicious afternoon tea or simply enjoy a coffee and a sweet treat from our daytime food menu.

We do our very best to accommodate food preferences and allergies within our Bistro, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options regularly featured. If you are booking a table in advance please make a note on our booking system or phone ahead of your visit to let us know of any food allergies.  Whatever happens, please let us know that we need to take special care of your food.
