At Ad Gefrin, location is everything. Our distillery sits proudly in the heart of Wooler, Northumberland, at the gateway to the Cheviot Hills. This landscape, steeped in history and natural beauty, offers us an unrivalled setting in which to craft world-class whisky.
Beneath our feet, we draw upon the purest Cheviot water from our own borehole – water shaped by the geology of these ancient hills. Surrounding us, some of the region’s finest malting barley is cultivated in local fields, ensuring that the raw ingredients for our whisky are sourced from the very land that defines us. Just a short drive away lies Simpson’s Malt, the internationally renowned, family-run maltsters, whose fifth-generation expertise ensures only the highest quality barley finds its way into our production.
Northumberland’s unique climate, with its cool air and natural variation, provides the perfect environment for whisky maturation – conditions that distillers have long prized. But it is not only modern farming and ideal weather that inspire us. The fertile Glendale Valley has nurtured crops for centuries, and here we have the opportunity to embrace both contemporary barley varieties loved by distillers today, and to rediscover heritage strains that may have been known in Anglo-Saxon Northumbria.
By weaving together the best of the present with a deep respect for the past, Ad Gefrin honours the timeless art of whisky-making. Our mission is simple yet profound: to craft spirits of exceptional character, rooted in tradition, shaped by innovation, and inseparable from the land and people of Northumberland.
